Dr. Kutz's early research was in the Septuagint, mainly focused on how the Greek translation of Job reflects the interpretation of the biblical text during the Intertestamental Period. However, much of the last two decades have been devoted to refining the instruction of Hebrew language and literature in the classroom. The Kutz-Josberger Hebrew Grammar was proven highly effective and was designated by the American Jewish Institute as the premier textbook in their field. His current significant areas of research and academic contribution include work on the book of Isaiah and the book of Job.

My name (and officially preferred title) is Ray. I was born a Texan to Canadian parents and German grandparents. I grew up in deserts, but now I live in green, green Portland. I drive either my MINI Cooper or Ram 4×4, and like smoked oyster pizza, playing guitar and bass, hanging with our adult kids and young grandkids, and watching “wildlife” like Seahawks and Ducks. I’ve taught at Multnomah for over a century and a half (in dog years). I’ve had my ‘stache for 7.2 years (in Celsius). And I’ve been happily married for over three and a half decades (normal years) to my wife, Tamara (actually, far better than normal). After graduating from Multnomah, I attended five different graduate schools in four different countries on three different continents. I am now a professor and so I still go to school every day. And I’m thankful for that every morning!

James earned his Ph.D. in theological studies from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He served as an administrator and leader in Christian higher education, overseeing education marketing and finance, instructional design, part- and full-time faculty, call center operations, and program design and development. He continues to consult with Christian colleges and seminaries, as well as non-profit organizations to help them build stronger organizational capacity, design strategic products and programs, and improve marketing, recruitment, and enrollment efforts.

He currently serves as President of Useful to God Ministries and as President of D. L. Moody Center, an independent non-profit organization inspired by the life and ministry of Dwight Moody and dedicated to proclaiming the gospel and challenging God’s follow Jesus.

James recently released Christian Resistance: Learning to Deny the World and Follow Jesus. He also authored Useful to God: Nine Lessons from the Life of D. L. Moody in 2022 and Thinking Christian: Essays on Testimony, Accountability, and the Christian Mind in 2020. In addition, he co-authored Trajectories: A Gospel-Centered Introduction to Old Testament Theology and “Isaiah” in The Moody Bible Commentary. James has also contributed to The Moody Encyclopedia of Messianic Prophecy, The Encyclopedia of Online Education and has published in Theological Educator and Cultural Encounters Journal. His various opinion pieces have been published by The Western Journal, The Christian Post, TownHall, American Thinker, Real Clear Religion, The Stream, and CNS News. In addition, he has been a guest on CBN’s Faith v. Culture program, The Counter-Culture Mom Podcast, Newsmax, and Hope Today with Perry Atkinson.
James also serves as adjunct faculty for Wheaton College in Wheaton’s Master of Arts in Ministry Leadership and Master of Arts in Global Leadership programs, as well as acting as faculty chair with Right On Mission (rightonmission.org) for which he teaches a variety of courses including Developing a Christian Mind, Prophets and Whistleblowers, Cultural Maturity, Secular Ideologies, and Research Discernment Lab.
